Manual Machinist – Job Description
Overview
A Manual Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining traditional machine tools to produce precision metal parts. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret technical drawings to create accurate components that meet exact specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual machine tools, including lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work orders to determine machining requirements.
- Measure, mark, and inspect materials using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision instruments.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds based on material and job requirements.
- Perform machining operations such as turning, milling, drilling, threading, and boring.
- Monitor machining processes to ensure accuracy, quality, and adherence to tolerances.
- Troubleshoot and adjust machines to correct issues or improve performance.
- Maintain equipment through routine cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
- Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and other machinists to meet production goals.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency with manual lathes, mills, and related equipment.
- Strong understanding of machining principles and metalworking processes.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T.
- Skilled in using precision measuring tools.
- Solid math skills, including geometry and basic trigonometry.
- Mechanical aptitude and problem‑solving ability.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with both prototype and production machining.
- Knowledge of various metals (steel, aluminum, brass, stainless, etc.).
- Familiarity with heat‑treating, threading, or surface finishing processes.
- Basic understanding of CNC machining (not required but beneficial).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Lift and handle materials up to typical shop limits.
- Use of hands for precise tool handling and measurement.
